Iceland- Heaven on the Earth

Iceland is a small country situated in North Atlantic, with a population of 3.64 lakhs and area of 40000 sq miles. I am going to tell you the best things about Iceland which makes it literally Heaven on the Earth.

Importance of Women- People in Iceland believes that women and men are equal and both of them have equal rights and equal role in doing things. Even men will have paternity leaves in this country to look after their wives and both of them should take of the kid equally. This is the first country in the world to have a political party formed and led entirely by women. Also every political party should have 40% quota for women. It is also the only country to have 48% of female members in parliament.

Military- Iceland has no starding army but Icelandic Coast Guard which maintains Iceland Crisis Response Unit to maintain peacekeeping missions and perform paramilitary functions. So the budget required to military is less than 0.01% of GDP of Iceland. According to 2011 Global Peace Index, Iceland is the most peaceful country in the world.

Education- The best educational system in the world is situated in Iceland. Here, education is stress-free but also maintains higher standards of education. Education is mandatory by law for children aged from 6 to 16 years. The minimum number of school days are 180 per year. Also Education is free for 6 to 16 years kids and even higher education is tuition-free, the only costs associated with higher education are registration fees. Iceland spends around 4% of GDP on scientific research and development (R&D).

Health- Iceland has a universal health care system and 85% will be paid by government and 15% should be paid as service fees and there are no private hospitals and no private insurances. Icelanders are among the world’s healthiest people, with average life expectancy of 81.8. Although obesity is a growing problem in this country, it is not ad prevalent as in other developed countries.

Economy– Iceland was the 7th most productive country in the world per capita and 5th most productive by GDP. About 85% of total primarty energy is supplied from domestically produced renewable energy sources. Use of abudant hydroelectric and geothermal power has made Iceland the world’s largest electricity producer per capita. It is also among the top 10 greenest economies in the world. It is also one of the most developed countries in the world.

Religion- Iceland is a very secular country, although Church of Iceland, a Lutheran body(sub-religion in Christianity), is the state church. A survey states that only 57% of Icelanders are religious,31% are non-religious and 10% are atheists, placing Iceland among top 10 countries with highest proportions of atheists in the world.

Government – Iceland is a representative democracy and parliamentary republic. Parliament has 63 members, elected for a maximum of 4 years. The head of the government is the Prime Minister, together with the cabinet, is responsible for executive government.The governments of Iceland have always been coalition governments, as no single party has received majority of seats till now. The world’s first directly elected female president head of the state took place in this country in 1980. In 2009, Iceland became the first country with an openly gay head of the government as this country is liberal to LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) from 1996 itself.

Also Icelanders are one of the most happiest people in the world according to a survey. What else do you need when the most basic needs such as education and health are almost free. So every country in the world should learn from the systems implemented by Iceland and so it is never less than a heaven that exists on Earth.
